Mark & Patti Ruffin are Making a Difference!

We love telling the stories of how our clients are living out their retirement.  Today we want to tell you the story of a husband and wife team that are making a real difference in retirement!  Mark and Patti Ruffin are taking a difficult health diagnosis and turning it into an opportunity to help others!  To properly explain we'll have to go back a few years.

Patti Ruffin was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) at the age of 16.  PKD is a genetic disease causing uncontrolled growth of cysts in the kidney eventually leading to kidney failure. It affects all racial and ethnic groups equally.  Patti has lost 5 family members to this disease and also has a brother who suffers from it.  When Patti met and eventually married her husband Mark they knew that dialysis and a transplant would be necessary.  Just 3 short years into their marriage Patti began dialysis.  After Patti and Mark celebrated their 5th anniversary, Patti received a transplant from a co-worker she had only known a short time!  Sadly, just 8 days after Patti received her transplant, her sister also passed away from PKD.  Patti knew that she wanted to help those like her and her family and kept an eye open for her chance.  So when she was able to retire in 2009 at the age of 54 from a long career in the medical industry, she followed her calling to become the Coordinator for the San Antonio Walk for PKD!  This volunteer position helps coordinate a major fundraising effort for the PKD Foundation in San Antonio.  Mark also retired recently after 41 years with AT&T in a management role and has joined Patti in her work to bring awareness to PKD.  With Mark in his new position as Volunteer Chapter Coordinator for the San Antonio PKD community, he and Patti are working hard to raise money and provide support to the families that suffer from PKD.  You can read more about the San Antonio Walk for PKD at http://walkforpkd.org/sanantonio, or if you would like to donate to Patti's personal walk team, please visit http://support.pkdcure.org/site/TR/Walk/WalkforPKD?pg=team&fr_id=1480&team_id=7758. If you would like more information on PKD, visit www.pkdcure.org.

When Mark and Patti aren't working to bring awareness to this important cause, they enjoy traveling all over the world.  From California to Europe and lots of places in between, they are having a great time seeing the world.  They also sing in their choir at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.  Their choir has performed in England multiple times and they even had the opportunity to sing at the National Cathedral!

Mark and Patti are certainly making the most of their retirement years, and we couldn't be happier for them!  Being able to share a passion and help others is a great way to spend your retirement! We'd love to hear your retirement story too! Give us a call today and let us know how you are spending your retirement.  We can't wait to hear from you!
